Our #GoodFoodCardiff campaign is our mission to make Cardiff become one of the UK’s most sustainable food places – by asking people from all walks of life to ‘make a pledge’ that will  help Cardiff achieve Gold Sustainable Food Places status by the end of 2024.

In our latest blog post, we take a look at the pledges that Grounds for Good – a local business repurposing used coffee grounds into a range of food and drink, home and lifestyle products –  has made to support these goals.

1. Supporting Local Producers

One of the key pledges made by Grounds for Good is to source their supplies and services from local producers, wherever possible. By partnering with local businesses, they ensure high-quality offerings while boosting the local economy. This approach also helps reduce their carbon footprint thus minimizing the environmental impact associated with transporting goods over long distances.

2. Reducing and Reusing Packaging

Grounds for Good is committed to reducing waste, including the responsible use of packaging. They actively reuse all packaging materials, where possible, and try to be plastic free/light, thus encouraging others to do the same. By repurposing materials, they contribute to a circular economy, extending the life of resources and minimizing environmental impact.

3. Reducing Food Waste and Promoting Upcycling

In their efforts to tackle food waste, Grounds for Good collects and repurposes spent coffee grounds and creatively transforms them into innovative and exciting new food & drink products for retail – from coffee to chocolate to gin.

4. Promoting Healthy Food Practices

Grounds for Good are committed to communicating good food practices, such as food upcycling which aligns well with Food Cardiff’s goals. Spent coffee grounds have a multitude of powerful ingredients, such as fibre, protein and antioxidants, all of which can be harnessed towards the development of functional, healthy foods.

5. Engaging and Educating the Community

Engagement and education are at the heart of Grounds for Good’s mission. They actively involve their local community through workshops and events that focus on sustainable living and adopting a circular economy approach. A proportion of profits from the sale of their non-alcohol products, is donated to The Wallich, a national homelessness charity.

6. Adopting Environmentally Friendly Practices

Beyond their food-related commitments, Grounds for Good is dedicated to reducing their overall environmental footprint. This includes reducing the use of single-use plastics, promoting the reuse of materials, and implementing comprehensive recycling programs. Their commitment to environmentally friendly practices supports the broader goals of Food Cardiff in building a sustainable and thriving community.
